When life sidetracks college dreams

In 1990, the Detroit Free Press awarded college scholarships to 20 low-income preschoolers in an elementary school chosen for its strong parental involvement and teacher commitment. After spending months tracking down the students, the newspaper finds only the three students who have been accepted to a college can use the money this year.
