Trees at local nurseries typically come in balled and burlap form but can require some care when planting. Megan Bohnenkamp, a Master Gardner and landscape professional, suggests that you plant the trees as soon as possible and handle them by the roots rather than the trunk. Once the tree is planted in the ground, she writes, remove the strings encircling the base of the tree but leave the burlap to decompose.
