Current, former education officials share charter-school vision

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan and former Education Secretary Lamar Alexander, who served in the role from 1991 to 1993, co-authored a column praising the potential for students to achieve in the country's charter schools. Since Alexander, now a U.S. senator, began urging superintendents in 1993 to open charter schools, 4,100 have been established nationwide, and Duncan writes that he hopes to continue that trend.
