AirTran eyes NYC, D.C. slots

AirTran Airways is not opposed to a merger, CEO Bob Fornaro said Wednesday, and the discount carrier believes it can play a role as "facilitator" in a merger currently rumored to be under consideration. Fornaro said he would like to pick up slots in New York and Washington, D.C., that may have to be divested in any possible merger among United Airlines, Continental Airlines and US Airways. "If there are carve-outs, perhaps we could play a role as a facilitator, bringing more competition to perhaps help someone clear regulatory hurdles," he said, noting that "a little less capacity east of the Mississippi River" would benefit AirTran.
