American reports $505 million Q1 loss

Despite gains in traffic and revenue, American Airlines saw its first-quarter loss widen to $505 million. Financial results were hurt by higher fuel prices, increased maintenance costs and natural disasters. The company was "simply unable to overcome the challenges of the global economic environment coupled with once-again escalating fuel prices," said CEO Gerard Arpey.
