House panel chairmen ask GAO to study imaging self-referral

The chairmen of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, Ways and Means Committee and Ways and Means Subcommittee on Health are urging the General Accountability Office to undertake a study on the impact of physician self-referral of advanced medical imaging and radiation treatments on Medicare costs. Previous GAO reports and other studies have shown that physician self-referral can lead to unnecessary use of advanced imaging procedures.
