Supreme Court tells debt collectors they are responsible for mistakes

The Supreme Court has ruled that debt collectors can't duck their responsibilities by claiming to have made legal mistakes. The move, which amends the bona fide error defense used by many debt collectors, could make it easier for consumers to sue over misapplications of debt-collection law. Justice Anthony Kennedy noted in his dissent that the ruling would allow people "to spin even good-faith, technical violations of federal law into lucrative litigation."
