Teacher programs adopt medical schools' residency model

Some teacher-training colleges are adopting a residency program modeled after medical school residencies. One such program, Boston Teacher Residency, has caught national attention. Participating teachers are mentored by a master teacher, and trainees work in Boston classrooms several days each week. The Boston program has had success in teaching teachers how to teach, and it offers a support system once educators are in the classroom that has kept 85% of graduates in teaching.
