U.S., U.K. to back development of floating platforms for offshore wind

The Department of Energy will work together with the U.K.'s Department of Energy and Climate Change to promote the development of floating platforms that would allow offshore wind turbines to be towed and positioned at depths beyond the capability of current turbines. The floating platforms would allow turbines to be stationed "in ever-deeper waters where the wind is stronger but without the expense of foundations down to the seabed," said Edward Davey, the U.K.'s secretary of state for Energy and Climate Change.
