Can social media help students bond?

Students are socializing more online -- both in and out of school -- and research now shows that social media interactions with peers and teachers that are similar to the real world, such as avatar environments or video chats, can help students bond with other people. Still, however, "in-person communication is still most effective for establishing connectedness," said Lauren Sherman, a psychology researcher at the Children's Digital Media Center@Los Angeles.
