UP: Natural gas being considered as viable option for locomotive fuel

Union Pacific is considering the use of natural gas as a fuel alternative for locomotives, said Robert Turner, UP senior vice president for corporate relations. However, the railroad will conduct tests on compressed natural gas instead of liquefied natural gas, which is being tested by BNSF and Canadian National for their own research projects. "It's an interesting opportunity," Turner said. "Interoperability is a concern, so this may need to involve the whole industry."
