Senate appears ready to level the sales-tax playing field

The Senate is poised to vote on a bill that would allow states to require online retailers to collect sales tax on purchases by in-state residents. Small brick-and-mortar merchants say the Marketplace Fairness Act could go a long way toward reversing the showrooming trend that has them spending time educating consumers who the buy the items online for less. "Right now, the government gives you a price advantage for purchasing on the Internet," said Rachelle Bernstein, NRF's tax counsel vice president.
