Asbestos bill fails, but lawmakers hold out hope

Although a Senate test vote on a bill that would create a multibillion-dollar trust fund for asbestos victims and grant businesses immunity from lawsuits failed, legislators from both parties expressed hope that an agreement might be reached later in the year. Senate leaders Bill Frist, R-Tenn., and Tom Daschle, D-S.D., will meet next week with a mediator in an effort to hammer out a compromise on the issue.
