Philadelphia seeks to cut faculty absenteeism

The Philadelphia school district is tackling the problem of teacher absenteeism, which in 2001-2002 ran about 6%, compared to a state average of 4%. CEO Paul Vallas wants to revise rules in the teachers' contract concerning the accumulation of sick days, which tend to be used just before retirement.
