Collaboration sees reduced number of hospital infections

The Beacon Collaborative, which includes 39 San Francisco Bay Area hospitals, said its members reduced the number of hospital infections from April 2006 to the end of 2007. Specifically, cases of ventilator-associated pneumonia and central line-associated bloodstream infections were cut back. The collaborative estimates that roughly 720 infections were avoided, saving almost $4 million in hospital costs.
