Though the biggest U.S. carriers all reported losses in the first quarter, executives at three companies -- Delta Air Lines, American Airlines and Continental Airlines -- all indicated that the worst of the downturn may be past. The key to a turnaround, said American CEO Gerard Arpey, will be a rebound in business travel. Companies "need to go to conventions. They need to go out and drum up business. And I think if the economy begins to pick up steam ... that will bode well for our traffic in the back half of this year."
