Analysis: Stimulus and odd buyer mix are skewing housing data

"I'm just not sure what exactly I'm supposed to compare today's housing market to," CNBC real estate reporter Diana Olick writes. The housing market is being driven by an unusual mix of first-time buyers and investors, while the changing effects of government stimulus policies distort the data, she wrote. Meanwhile, a lot of the reports don't count the "shadow inventory" of foreclosed houses, Ms. Olick noted.
