Asian demand puts upward pressure on raw materials costs

Surging demand from Asia is pushing up the cost of rubber, iron ore, lumber and other raw materials worldwide. That's hurting American businesses already battered by recession. The Bureau of Labor Statistics' producer-price index showed a nearly 45% year-over-year increase in the price of iron ore, construction sand and pulp shot, the fastest pace of increase since the mid-1970s.
