Aviation safety reforms threatened by FAA language unrelated to safety

House and Senate staffers are working to reconcile two versions of a sweeping FAA reauthorization bill, and a key lawmaker says the legislation should be finalized "within a couple weeks." While supporters tout the new safety measures included in the legislation, some fear a pro-union provision targeting FedEx could derail the entire process. Tennessee's two U.S. senators have vowed to block the unionization language, which they view as a giveaway to FedEx rival UPS. But House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Chairman James Oberstar, D-Minn., a longtime union supporter, insists the FedEx provision must be included in the final language.
