Social priorities get legal protections

Social entrepreneurs have long believed that profit should not be the only goal in business -- but lawyers and corporate governance experts weren't so sure. Now several states are working on laws to shield companies from shareholder lawsuits over their social goals. Maryland has passed the first such law, and California, Vermont and New York are among those looking to follow suit.
