Computer-assisted reporting methods that reporters typically use to verify or beef up stories can also be employed to raise alerts about stories that should be covered, said Derek Willis of The New York Times. In Willis' case, this kind of computer-driven alert tipped him off to a nonprofit's suspicious $500,000 political donation.
