U.S. automakers struggle to win over upscale motorists

California is America's most important luxury-auto market, but most storied U.S. brands have been sidelined by imports, writes Alex Taylor III. To make a comeback, Cadillac and Lincoln will have to show they can shed their "mass-market mentality" and provide a tailored service to high-end buyers. "Both Cadillac and Lincoln face a long journey ahead of them to get back to upscale brand respectability in California," Taylor warns.
