Group deals are no bargain for plastic surgeons

Plastic surgeons offering deals through group coupon websites may recoup only 25% of normal charges and could get into legal trouble in some states, writes law student Erica Cohen. Medicare, Medicaid and some state laws forbid paid referrals for medical services, and deal sites such as Groupon collect a portion of fees charged, Cohen notes. Moreover, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and other professional organizations bar members from offering financial incentives for referrals unless the patient is informed of the arrangement, Cohen writes.
