Observing teachers' classroom performance is important, but it may not be the single best way to improve a school, principal Peter DeWitt writes in this blog post. There are problems associated with the way some states structure the observations, DeWitt writes, while researchers suggest that some school leaders don't know what to look for in quality teachers. Instead, professional development and collaboration have a better track record, he notes. "The professional learning we embrace, share with others and use in our classrooms and school is at the core of school improvement," DeWitt writes.
