The FDA has granted Sucampo Pharmaceuticals and Takeda Pharmaceuticals expanded approval for their Amitiza drug to treat constipation from opioids used for chronic pain. Forty percent or more of patients who use opioids for chronic pain not associated with cancer experience constipation, the companies said.
