The design for a new bridge spanning the Columbia River in Oregon received short shrift, according to columnist Steve Duin. The cost for the Columbia River Crossing stands at $4.2 billion, but the majority of the preliminary process has been spent on engineering and dealing with restrictions. The project is complicated by the involvement of Department of Transportation officials from both Oregon and Washington, Duin writes.
