ComEd hopes to install 4M smart meters over 10 years

In the next decade, Commonwealth Edison plans to install smart meters for all of its 4 million customers in northern Illinois, starting this summer with 130,000 customers living along the Eisenhower Expressway in the Chicago area. The plan still awaits formal approval by the Illinois Commerce Commission, however. ComEd's funding plan for its pilot project was originally rejected by an Illinois Appeals Court, but a new law on the books is expected to help the company move its plans forward.
