Reading is taught across the curriculum under common core

As states implement the Common Core State Standards, a growing number of science and social studies teachers are incorporating reading and writing into lessons. In one Kentucky district, where some schools are trying the approach, teachers use a toolkit developed in collaboration with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. In it, there are several reading and writing prompts that can be tailored to various subjects and include opportunities for analysis and argumentation.
