Teaching reading in the social studies classroom

As states implement the Common Core State Standards, a growing number of social studies and science teachers are incorporating reading and writing into lessons. In one Kentucky district, where some schools are trying the approach, teachers use a tool kit developed in collaboration with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The tool kit contains several template tasks that can be tailored to various subjects and include opportunities for analysis and argumentation.
