The New York City Department of Health found that the number of adult New Yorkers with diabetes has risen from 4.2% in 1993 to 10.5% in 2011, a rate higher than the 9.2% national average. "I think these statistics are very disturbing," said New York City Health Commissioner Dr. Thomas Farley. "We have an epidemic of obesity that is driving an epidemic of diabetes. People with obesity are twice as likely to have diabetes."
