Robot that mimics turtles may reveal much about beaches

A robot that mimics the flipper movement of young turtles scooting across sand may provide insights into beach restoration and conservation. The FlipperBot developed by researchers at Georgia Tech and Northwestern University duplicates the crucial wristlike motion of the turtles that keeps them moving forward without their flippers getting mired or driving their head into the sand. The robot's ability to maintain forward motion may reveal key facts about the sand itself and whether a beach has been restored along natural lines.
