The value of alternative-academic careers

Alternative-academic careers can be a good fit for Ph.D. job seekers who are not interested in tenure-track faculty positions, write Brenda Bethman and C. Shaun Longstreet, co-founders of Alt-Academix. Many Ph.D. graduates buy into what the authors call a false dichotomy of "tenure or bust," while alt-ac careers are just as valuable, they argue in this commentary. "The versatility of the alt-ac employee and their flexibility to serve a broad range of needs make them the go-to workhorses of the 21st century campus where fluctuating budgets and shifting trustee directions require an agile staff," Bethman and Longstreet conclude.
