Companies that use automation in their distribution centers may be missing a "crucial layer" that can make the technique more strategic and holistic -- the warehouse control system -- writes Randy Marble. "Everything in a DC is based around the outbound vehicle schedule. A WCS simplifies planning because it views all of the equipment in the warehouse or DC as a single unit rather than a collection of components. It also can optimize gaps that inevitably occur between systems," he writes.
