U.S. durable-goods orders surge in March

U.S. orders for durable goods jumped 2.6% in March, with gains broadly based across sectors, the Commerce Department reports. In terms of second-quarter growth, "it sets things up very well," said Robert Stein, deputy chief economist at First Trust Portfolios in Wheaton, Ill. "Business investment will be a solid contributor to growth."
