Scientists: Food-flavoring chemical puts workers at risk

Some workers in the food industry are at risk of developing a potentially fatal lung disease linked to exposure to a chemical in food flavorings, according to government scientists. The disease was detected among popcorn plant workers in the Midwest when at least 200 workers became ill and three died, and experts say there are now more cases among workers at other plants. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has so far refused to consider new regulations on use of the chemical.
