Chemical, pharma industries praise patent-reform bill's progress

The House Judiciary Committee's move this month to advance a patent-reform bill was lauded by major chemical and pharmaceutical firms, as it would implement a "first to file" model. The firms, including Dow Chemical, DuPont and Pfizer, are members of the Coalition for 21st Century Patent Reform. "Our coalition believes the legislation reported, with overwhelmingly broad bipartisan support, will improve the operations of [the Patent and Trademark Office] and procedures for obtaining and enforcing patents," said Gary Griswold, the coalition's director.
