Chu urges gas industry to ramp up safety in fracking

The natural gas industry must "step forward" in developing best practices to extract shale gas, Energy Secretary Steven Chu said. The federal government is investigating issues of public health and safety brought by hydraulic fracturing, and the Department of Energy has found evidence of water pollution possibly caused by fracking. "The question is, what is the cause of that, and how can they be prevented and mitigated. Science will give us better ways of monitoring what is going on," Chu said.
