Dish mulls Blockbuster strategy, holds onto 500-plus stores

Dish Network may have signaled its intent to focus on digital content in telling a federal bankruptcy court that it would keep open more than 500 Blockbuster stores -- about one-third of its current total -- when it buys the video-rental company. Dish, which last week asked for more time to close the deal, might have its sights set on rights that Blockbuster holds from its online video-on-demand service, industry observers say. Dish could be positioning itself to compete with Netflix and other streaming video companies.
