Facebook takes AOL's playbook and runs with it

AOL made a fortune in the early days of the Web by spoon-feeding a curated version of the Internet to its subscribers, and Facebook is following in its footsteps, writes Jay Baer. But Facebook goes further than AOL, acting not simply as a portal, but also as a reference point for third-party sites -- and that makes it a far more powerful tool for marketers, Baer argues. "[N]o company in my lifetime -- including AOL ([whose] playbook they stole) -- has so successfully infiltrated our lives like a digital tapeworm," he writes.
