So long, Sarkozy?

French President Nicolas Sarkozy finished second in last weekend's elections and is poised to perform equally badly in next month's run-off contest. That's bad news, writes James Poulos, because uniquely among this generation of European premiers, Sarkozy has a charismatic, authoritative leadership style that recalls that of Winston Churchill or Charles de Gaulles. "To pull Sarkozy offstage is to make European leadership the most boring it has been since the 1970s," Poulos complains.
