Safeway anticipates better second half of 2013

Safeway, which saw same-store sales increase 1.5% in the first quarter compared with Q1 of 2012, is expecting a stronger second half of the year as more shoppers sign up for its loyalty and fuel-rewards program, CEO Steve Burd says. The retailer also plans to launch a health and wellness initiative this year, which Burd says could be a significant sales driver.
