Mortgage demand drops as interest rates rise

Lenders originated $235 billion in mortgages during the first quarter, a drop of 58% from a year earlier, reports Inside Mortgage Finance. The volume of new-purchase loans remained flat, with refinancing representing most of the decline. Higher interest rates are driving a shift in the mortgage market, which in Q1 hit its lowest level in 14 years.
