Column: Free rewards attract fliers to mile programs

American Airlines in 1980 began a program modeled on a grocery store reward program, The New York Times' David Leonhardt writes. Today, frequent-flier programs keep thousands of people loyal to particular airlines. Leonhardt notes miles are less valuable today because so many people have earned them.
