"Smart grid" still up to five years away, experts say

The smart grid holds the promise of averting major blackouts by managing electricity, but utilities must first decide on a set of standards for the grid. The Electric Power Research Institute estimates it will take four to five years before a smart grid can come online in the U.S. The stimulus package allocated $4.5 billion for the smart grid, the majority of which will fund pilot projects.
