Analyst: Chemical market is set for major consolidation in 2010

Merger-and-acquisition activity in the U.S. chemical industry is expected to bounce back in 2010, as pent-up demand from companies is about to be acted upon, said BB&T analyst Frank Mitsch. "Strategic buyers, armed with balance sheets flush with cash, are seeking ways to accelerate growth beyond their organic means," he said. Among the possible consolidation is the market for coatings and adhesives, while companies emerging from bankruptcies, including Chemtura and LyondellBasell, are prime targets for acquisition, Mitsch added.
