BASF's decision to add capacity in Nanjing, China, through its BASF-YPC joint venture with Sinopec is part of a strategy to bring its niche products closer to consumers, said Bernd Blumenberg, president of the joint venture. BASF and Sinopec are expanding ethylene capacity in Nanjing and are building 10 downstream plants. "We believe we have to be close to our customers. ... we want 70% of business in Asia to be based on products made in Asia," Blumenberg added.
