Indiana is facing a shortage of psychiatrists, particularly in specialties for treating children and the elderly, due in part to funding cuts that have eliminated residencies and training opportunities at medical schools and caused facilities to merge or close. Some mental health facilities are hiring temporary physicians to provide fill-in psychiatric services.
