PepsiCo and Cargill file sweetener patents

PepsiCo and Cargill are developing natural sweeteners, patent applications indicate. The patents show PepsiCo's Quaker Oats division has developed a method of modifying oats to derive a natural sweetener, while Cargill's application is based on monatin, a naturally occurring, high-intensity sweetener that grows on a plant in South Africa.
