2 unplanned readmission quality measures get NQF approval

The National Quality Forum has endorsed a National Committee for Quality Assurance measure that counts inpatient stays followed by an acute readmission for any diagnosis within 30 days, contrasted with the predicted probability of an acute readmission, designed for quality monitoring and accountability at the health plan level. The NQF also endorsed a measure developed by CMS and Yale University that estimates a risk-standardized rate of unplanned readmissions within 30 days of discharge and is intended for evaluating hospital performance.
