TMAO compound may play role in cardiovascular disease risk

Individuals with the highest levels of trimethylamine-N-oxide, a compound produced in the stomach, were 2.5 times more likely to suffer a heart attack, stroke or heart disease than those with the lowest TMAO levels, a study showed. The compound can make it more difficult for the liver and intestines to remove cholesterol, lead researcher Dr. Stanley Hazen of the Cleveland Clinic said. The findings were published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
